It was a great weekend to kick off the un-official opening of pool season in SoCal. Burning Tree Records had on their slate a party at the World Famous Pink Motel. Blue sky’s and temp.’s in the upper 70’s were the setting for this epic day of pool skating. Included in your $10 ticket price you got to skate, free beer, free BBQ, and a free Fist of Fury CD (quite the bargain if you ask me). Several hundred revelers were treated to a skateboarding spectacle unlike all the pre-fab contests, demos, and musical shows.

I tried to get there a little early but at 2:30 the drop in lines for a run in the pool were already about 10 people deep. Soon enough the roll-ins were brushed aside as a cluster-fuck of pool shredders inched in tight above the waterfall. Within another hour it was already getting ridiculous in the pool with random numbers of skaters dropping in at will where ever they could see an opening. This led to massive amounts of close-calls and several collisions; much to the crowds delight!

The whole lip of the bowl was quickly packed shoulder to shoulder with partiers, skaters, musicians, photographers and the like. This atmosphere pushed the skating to insanely high levels. Watching the likes of Benji Galloway, the Greek, Richter, Aaron Murray, Piaseki, Duncan, Reattigui, Grisham, Danger, Macdonald, Ruda Lopez, Tuma, a grip of Sacrifice and Scum skates guys, and dozens of others was awe inspiring.

Meanwhile the bands were kicking of good and loud punk rock. Chix Pack, Blue Collar Special, the Dimwits, RKL (Rich Kids on LSD) and Fist of Fury banged away while small slam pits went into effect. Word from the promoters was that it was a good show, everyone behaved, and they broke even.
