National skateboarding tourney coming to Costa Mesa
The Maloof Money Cup will run the opening weekend of the 2008 Orange County Fair.

COSTA MESA Already recognized as a home for skateboarding in Orange County with its popular Volcom Skate Park, the City of the Arts will next open its doors to a professional skateboarding championship event.

The Maloof Money Cup, founded by Sacramento Kings and Palms Hotel and Casino owner Joe Maloof, will have its inaugural run July 11-13 during the opening weekend of the 2008 Orange County Fair.

The festival will feature a village with skateboarding retailers, a youth skateboarding camp, an amateur event and three United States championship competitions sanctioned by World Cup Skateboarding.

A $100,000 prize will be awarded to the champion of the US Pro Street Championship; $75,000 and a souped-up sports utility vehicle will go to the winner of the US Pro Vert Championship; and $25,000 will be given to the winner of the US Women’s Pro Street Championship.

The course, which will be housed in the Grandstand Arena, will be custom designed with input by skateboard professionals, Maloof said.

The roster of pros slated to throw down on the street course and vert ramps is unknown but the list will be pulled from the upper echelon of the World Cup Skateboarding Circuit with a few wildcard skaters thrown in the mix, said Diondra McFerran, a spokeswoman with the Cup.

Steve Beazley, senior vice president of the OC Fair, said the action sports genre is something new to offer to fair customers, but the event blends perfectly with the fair’s flair for experimentation.
