Extremely early skatepark concept as an amusement park "ride"

Tempe's popular Wild West-themed amusement park got a revitalization in the mid-1960's and reopened as "New Legend City."

With this grand re-opening, the park introduced a new concept ride: a skateboard track.

The Legend City ride was broken into two sections, the "pipeline," (1000 ft, long, 8 ft wide concrete snake run featuring six banked turns). and a smaller area called the "beach" where riders had to prove they were able to skate.

The track was surrounded by dirt and had piles of hay at the bottom for softer impact. Riders walked back up to the top on a tiki-torch lined pathway running alongside the track.
