CONVERSE COASTAL CARNAGE RETURNS TO

HUNTINGTON BEACH FOR NIKE US OPEN OF SURFING

Converse skate ambassadors Rune Glifberg, Tom Remillard and Sammy Baca headline the pro/am skateboarding competition

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. (July 21, 2011) – Today, Converse Inc. announces the return of Converse Coastal Carnage, a pro/am skate competition consisting of 40 premier skateboarders in Huntington Beach, CA. taking place against the backdrop of the Nike US Open of Surfing – the world’s largest youth culture and action sports festival. Converse Coastal Carnage continues in its third year as the skate component to the event which is owned and produced by IMG, the global leader in sports and entertainment. The skate competition is free for spectators and runs Friday, August 5 through Sunday, August 7.

Converse Coastal Carnage will be a jam format consisting of 10 qualifying rounds with four riders skating against each other at the same time. As an invite-only, pro/am event, Converse Coastal Carnage combines experienced professionals like Converse Skate Ambassador Rune Glifberg and Sammy Baca competing against a wave of fresh new talent. Up-and-comer Converse Skate Ambassador Tom Remillard returns this year with a vengeance for the top prize.  Placing second last year, Remillard is among many of the young up-and-comers giving the veteran riders like Glifberg a run for their money.

“Now in its third year, Converse Coastal Carnage continues to gain momentum. It’s awesome to see skate legends and new talent competing so intensely side by side, and the beach setting creates a real electric atmosphere for the guys,” said Geoff Cottrill, Chief Marketing Officer of Converse.  “We’re looking forward to putting on a great show for the crowd this year.”

Converse Coastal Carnage brings the look and feel of a retro pool to a modern skate competition. The course, a double wooden bowl with plenty of hips, tight corners and mellow transitions, incorporates new obstacles this year to keep the competition primed and ready for anything.

The Converse Skate Pavilion, a mini-bowl located directly in front of the main course, also returns this year, free and open to the public. Anyone with a board is welcome to skate and try out the latest Converse product throughout the entire week of the Nike US Open of Surfing.

Also appearing at Coastal Carnage this year is one of Converse’s premier riders, Kenny Anderson.  This summer Anderson launched his first signature shoe, the Converse KA-ONE, with an integrated brand campaign and short film titled “L.A. TO VEGAS”.  The KA-ONE is sold at specialty retailers, and online at www.converse.com for a suggested retail price of $60.
