30Th St. Heliport Skatepark – New York, New York

(9/9/2006)
Today was opening day for this skatepark, built by Andy Kessler & crew out of cannabilized parts & pieces from another skatepark formerly located by Chelsea Piers further downtown. There is a huge 9′ deep clover, a street area with a nice mini and a spine connecting to a smaller mini by the bowl. I didn’t notice any rails or stairs, but there’s plenty of that stuff in NYC, anyway. The coping is federal stone, the surface is skatelite – with all new skatelite in the deep end. The only drawback was 6″ of water in the deep end when we arrived. Some brooms and a bucket lots of sunshine and an hour later we were ready to roll. I have no doubt they’ll get the drainage fixed soon. The park is located at 30th St. and the West Side Highway in Manhattan. Lots of eye candy along the bike path adjacent to the park, too. The helicopters constantly taking off & landing can get pretty loud so you end up shouting a lot. So you get hoarse, too. Super fun layout. Free, helmets required, open weekends only after labor day (11AM – 6 PM). Summer hours are more generous.
