Built by a politician in his move toward becoming a congressman

Palmetto Skateboard Parks was a partnership between South Carolina State Representative Tom Marchant and builder Tommy Brooks— Marchant had heard skateparks were a booming business opportunity, and he also saw it as an unconventional political appeal to the youth.

When the park originally opened, it was under the name "Palmetto Skateboard Park", after the company that built it, but within the first couple of months, switched to “Paved Wave.” 

Palmetto had planned two other parks after Easley — one in Clemson, and one in Greenville — but this was the only one to be completed.  The location for the Clemson park was established, and permits were granted, but the park was never constructed.  Little is known of the Greenville plan. 

Design-wise, the park was a single large bowl with a transverse mogul field, most closely resembling the Myrtle Beach park also designed by D&D Skateboard Inc.  The entire park including buildings reportedly cost $125,000.
