Basic Bowl BBQ ’03

big props to dennis lamb, the owner of the basic bowl, as this event is a testimony of fearless dedication to the art of pool skating and party throwing. imagine a couple hundred, heavily loaded and amply wrecked skateboard enthusiasts crammed into your backyard, house, front yard (why is backyard one word and front yard is two??) and street. your shit and your house, all exposed to a load of people who have a ‘fuck all’ attitude. if you’ve ever done it then you know. truth be told, the whole time we were there everyone seemed very respectful to the premises.

typical barfly disclosure statement: it was a party with much booze, skateboarding, hot chicks, rude dicks and bitchin’ bands. i partook in el large-o beers and the watching of / listening to skateboarding, hot chicks, rude dicks and bitchin’ bands. did i emphasize the booze. okay then, my recollection of the days events.

you must understand that the basic bowl has been around for quite awhile (hence the 10th annual bbq) and has seen a lot of devastation over the years. this translates into over-vert in the deep end and a few cracks here and there. none of the skaters seemed even remotely effected by this. backyard pool session? not quite. take a look at some of the participants and let your imagination go.

the overall jist of things / good ‘ol times to be had / contest: groms
(we missed them but caught a little of their action later on, rippers),
ams (consisting of a few rippers under 13), masters (this translates into
the over 30 crowd), womens (this is for the ones with breasts not associated
with excess alcohol consumption) and pros (the ones who make you drink because
you suck so bad).

since there will probably be some sort of rundown on the results
a little farther down, i am just going to tell you what i saw, smelt, dealt and
felt:

here is the shit. i had been hearing a couple of
buzz names lately – benji galloway and jimmy
the greek. fuck me! rippers to the
tenth degree. some very memorable lines took place. fizzuckers
destroyed the bowl-

benji proceeded to carve / grind no less than six walls in his
first run – switchstance. it seemed like a warm up run compared
to his later ins. full-sized airs, macho style grinds and tech shit galore. i
would say watch for him, but, it is already too late, he is here!
let’s hope j-ed or tam-E got some kill shots.

jimmy the greek is super aggressive and balls out
with his last minute lines. he skates like one of those guys who drops in and
then decides which wall to hit, all the while pulling out sick shit like b/s
d’s over the hip in the deep. reminds me of a northwest shredder but i have
zero clue as to his origins. i can say that the chicks think he’s
hot and he seems like a good guy.

dave ruel; his name is synonymous with pool skating and
shit-howdy, lines out the ass. seriously, i just marvel at the
length of his stand up grinds, full speed ahead, toss around f/s airs and hand
draggin’ style.

ricky stiles was in the yard, throwing down as always. it really
is a trip to see people of this caliber skate. every single bowl i have every
watched ricky skate, he has ruled.  fro-a-holic, hydraulic!

mark partain! this dude is dirty (it’s a good
thing). full lines, harsh hesh attack and full style. took
a lot of people by surprise, one of the destroyers for sure!

jake piasecki is a ripper who reminds me of a cross between chris
miller ( i think it is the fastplants) and kevin staab (i think it is the wiry
frame). he is full of aggro skate energy,  big airs and long
laybacks. jake takes his skating seriously!

the masters…. dave duncan, eddie reatueeegiiiggigi (i can never spell his name), morgan and dave all stood out as rippers. endless grind / carve combos!  how old is the masters? how many of us qualify for that racket…each masters participant took home cold, hard cash…not so much. rippers to the end, hats off!

groms! seriously, you have know fucking idea what 11 and 12 year olds are up to nowadays. good luck to them and good riddance to us fatty’s. i didn’t know you could skate a bowl that fast! hope we have video!

the whole thing was a blast. i am stoked we got invited and cannot wait to see some of these rulers again. who knows what will happen next year let alone at the mervyn’s beach bash in hermosa in may.

in contradiction to the majority there are always a few choadler…so, if you were one of the tweaker, chauvinist pigs that demoralize women to play up your own ego…have fun cock chuggers and stay home with your crisco next time!

barfly-

stuff i vaguely remember yet am absolutely sure either transpired or may have happened….maybe….check with j-ed, he’ll know:

three kegs of yummy, delicious beer were purchased and i did not drink a drop. g
