QUICKSIX AUSTIN POYNTER 9 Months, 1 Week ago

Austin Poynter is not your average 15 year old, let alone your average teenager. Polite, articulate, mild-mannered, and completely non-plussed by his own ridiculously high level of skateboarding talent. We watched him huck airs in a range that is on par with the elite pros competing in the ProTec, along with a blistering lip attack and a deep bag of assorted bangers. He won the recent Vans Am Contest at the Combi and he's definitely got a blindingly bright future ahead of him.

MRZ: So Austin, how long have you been skating?
Austin: It's coming up on about 7 years.

MRZ: Who are your sponsors?
Austin: Bones, Osiris Shoes, Powell-Peralta, 187 Pads, S-One Helmets, McGill's Skateshop, Oakley. I believe that's it.

MRZ: Where do you usually skate?
Austin: I skate at the Encinitas YMCA, I come down to the Vans Skatepark once in a while, and Clairmont YMCA.

MRZ: Where's your favorite place to skate?
Austin: For bowls, definitely the Combi at Vans, I like to skate the two vert ramps down in San Diego. (Clairmont, Encinitas)

MRZ: So you just recently won the Vans Amateur contest here at the Combi, how was that?
Austin: That was really fun, it was a really good experience. It took a lot of practice for sure but it was all totally worth it.

MRZ: I saw a bunch of the footage, you and a lot of young kids were killing it!
Austin: Thanks!

MRZ: What's usually playing on your iPod?
Austin: AC/DC, The Ramones, a lot of stuff.

MRZ: You can't go wrong with The Ramones! Who are your favorite skaters right now?
Austin: Bucky Lasek and Alex Perelson. Those guys are just so good!

MRZ: What sorts of tricks are you working on right now?
Austin: Mastering every trick I guess…

MRZ: Is there one in particular you want to get dialed?
Austin: I haven't gotten McTwists yet.

MRZ: It'll happen for sure. So why bowl skating? How did you get into it?
Austin: When I lived in Orange County, I used to ride the vert ramp here at Vans. When they tore that down, I was forced to skate the Combi. What better place to learn how to skate bowls than here?

MRZ: Absolutely. Any final words, anybody you want to thank?
Austin: Yes. I want to thank my parents for all of their support!

Thanks Austin. Your future looks bright!
