4th ANNUAL BACK TO THE BANKS RETURNS

Contest kicks off huge weekend of skateboarding for New York City

NYC, NY – July 30, 2008 – Skateboarders from around the globe will descend upon New York City’s most coveted skate spot for an opportunity to participate in the Back to the Banks contest started by Steve Rodriguez, founder of 5Boro Skateboards. The 4th annual event commences on Saturday August 16th, 2008 around 1:00 PM, on the red brick banks beneath the iconic Brooklyn Bridge (Manhattan side).

Featuring veteran pros and hungry amateurs from all over the world, Back to the Banks is recognized as one of the most legit street contests in the US. While simultaneously taking on the vibe of a block party and celebration of a historical spot as well as a contest, this event also provides spectators full access to all the action. The contest runs in a jam format and is open to anyone who wants to participate. The purpose of Back to the Banks is to raise funds for new obstacles and events, in addition to commemorating the collaborative effort between the skate community and the city to designate and preserve the Brooklyn Banks as an official skate park.

“Back to the Banks reminds us of how lucky we are to still have this legendary spot to session on a daily basis and to raise awareness of the need for skaters to work with the local government and community to make more spots like this possible,” Steve Rodriguez, event director, said. “I’m looking forward to see who shows up this year, who steps it up and who walks away with the cash! The best thing about this event is that anyone can enter and the crowd basically decides who wins.”

Every year new obstacles are built for the contest and are left as new features for the park afterwards. This year a notable upgrade to the event is seen in the event prizing, which will now boast a cumulative purse of $10,000 for winners of the Best Trick Format, taking place on each of the various designated obstacles at the banks. With the prize money doubled from past years, this skaters are guaranteed to up the ante for their piece of the purse.

2007 saw a diverse field of talent emerge from the best trick format in a mind-blowing display of

skateboarding. 2,000 people gathered on hand to have the chance see and skate with their favorite skater at New York City’s legendary skate spot. Not everyone will walk away with prize money this year, but everyone at Back to the Banks walks can walk away with pleasant memories and free product from the event’s sponsors.
