Old Man Army / Save a Life, Drain a Pool deck (Product Review)
BLKPRJKT

Ah Arizona. I have the fondest memories of that place. Pipe trips in the late 1970's. Pool trips in the 1980's. And more recently, knockdown drag out road trips for contests and heavy sessions. Good shit happens in Az. Maybe it's because the crews out there are down for skating first and foremost, and everything else is secondary at best. 2 trips in a row now and the Old Man Army heads have tracked me down bearing gifts, much like the 3 wise men of christmas lore. On this last junket, the OMA crew presented me with not with frankincense and myrrh, but a copy of the latest issue of their zine, a most bitchin' "dirtbag for life" tee, and most importantly, the latest pool cue from their growing arsenal of wood product.

Now I'll be the first person to give you contradictory information on graphics. Having performed graphic duties for several companies, I can honestly say that graphics are everything and nothing at the same time. They can make or break the sales margin of a deck, even a company itself. The graphics on this particular deck only add to it's appeal. Let's see now, Father Time, in skeletal form, cracking wise over the death box while the hapless remains of a former bather swirl the drain for eternity below, complete with the inflatable dino, a snorkel, swim fins, and gogs. Shaun Noon's killer artwork makes this one a winner right out of the gate. Good shit.

The "Save a life, drain a pool" deck is a big boy board. This sucker isn't made for tech diggity nonsense, it's all business. 33.25" long, 9" wide, and with a 16" wheelbase. The shape is a new/old school hybrid, think Joe Johnson meets Jeff Grosso with straight rails and no tail flare. Slightly tapered square tail, and a rounded up square nose. The concave is on the deeper side of medium, and feels very comfortable. When I set this deck up and rolled it, it felt solid and snappy, no mush-out or dead flex at all, and for it's size, it's surprisingly light, basically a no-bullshit affair. The long wheelbase will get you whipping through those bigger bowls with authority, but won't prevent you from getting into those tight spots.

Go get one if you think you're man enough, or old enough for that matter. And grip up on the latest OMA zine as well if you can, sick photos and good editorial, a definite must for any skate zine fan.
