Lady Sovereign - Public Warning Ear-Pollution CD
November 16th, 2006 17:38
Lady Sovereign. She is a pint-sized rapper from the projects of London, and she just put out her debut full length, Public Warning. I am gonna go ahead and end the year early and declare this the Rap Album of the Year. Now let me tell you why.

British underground hip hop has been on the rise over the last five years or so, and Lady Sovereign has a strong pedigree to live up to. Mike Skinner (The Streets) and Dizzee Rascal have both released albums in the states that were met with critical acclaim, and Lady Sovereign holds her own in this company quite nicely. Public Warning is track after track of razor sharp wit, hyper-speed flow, and super catchy beats delivered with a decidedly British slant. The album presents itself as a pleasant departure from the Neptunes beat factory of rap that is currently dominating American airwaves. Not that I feel the need to convince you all any further, but Jay-Z signed her to Def Jam after hearing her freestyle. That makes her the first non American ever signed to that label. Not bad for some little white girl from the London projects, eh?

Public Warning is culture shock of the right kind. Find and buy now.
