I am over trying to write a quick summary in the the little blurb area, so I have decided to write whatever pops into my head at that moment. The fact that "14 inch donkey cock" popped into my head before anything else is a tad disturbing, but I guess I will just go with it. So here's where I really should figure out some clever little segue that will lead me into the review proper, but I don't have the skills to do that either. So let's just talk about The Mars Volta from here on out, okay?
Amputechture is the third full length release from The Mars Volta, and it is a continuation of the theme explored by the first two releases. To say that this band is on the forefront of experimental metal-type music may be a bit of an understatement. There are free jazz freak outs, crazy atonal meltdowns, vocal oddities, backward solos, and a whole lot more packed into these eight schizophrenic tracks. The Mars Volta may be a little much to digest for folks who expect a little structure, but that is exactly what makes this band special. Their work is tense, disturbing, maniacal and beautiful all at the same time. Amputechture only allows you to relax long enough to be able to make you jump out of your skin.
I really don't know how to sum this all up. For some reason, my brain skipped a track and I just started thinking about how Tower Records is closing all of their stores. Maybe you should go to Tower and buy Amputechture at a discount or something. Or perhaps I could finish with an anecdote about the time that I was listening to this CD at work, and one of my co-workers walked by and asked "Dude, is that Halloween music or something?". Yeah, I think that is the way to end it. So, umm, some dude at my work walked by and asked if I was listening to Halloween music when I had this on. Wait, I just said that...
