All hail Mastodon, the band that is here to save us from the current state of heavy metal. This highly anticipated follow-up to Leviathan does not disappoint by any means. Blood Mountain will crush you, and you will love every minute.
For those not familiar with Mastodon, their particular area of expertise is a kind of prog metal with mythological lyrics about stuff like wolves, giants, ogres, and that sort of thing. Hell, their last album was all about Moby Dick. So, not your typical thrashy semi-Satanic content. That should make your mommy happy.
Anyway, Blood Mountain is a continuation of the band's move away from more straight ahead thrash, and this is a really good thing in my opinion. There are some down tempo moments, like on Sleeping Giant (track 3), and they have actually started singing some of the lyrics as opposed to the non-stop screamy growl. Bladecatcher (track 6) is this crazy sort of instrumental freak-out that morphs into some impressive guitar shreddage. Crystal Skull (track 2) is a freight train of a song, with tons of crazy drum fills, and riffs that are no doubt giving that dude at Guitar Center a boner right now.
In summary, Blood Mountain rules. I wish I could bust out some more big words or something right here to convey the magnificence of this album. It makes me happy to be a hessian, how about that? Go buy now. |
