Thom Yorke - The Eraser Ear-Pollution CD
June 7th, 2006 10:08
Let's just get something out of the way right off the bat. Radiohead is one of my all time favorite bands, and they can do no wrong. Now you know where I am coming from in terms of bias. Full disclosure and all that. Ok, ahem...

Thom Yorke has put the long time off between Radiohead albums to good use and released his first solo work. The Eraser is not a major surprise musically, as a matter of fact it would make a fine companion to Kid A stylistically (is that a word?). This is a record of bleeps and blips, very much influenced by artists like Aphex Twin, Lali Puna, and any other Warp Records artist that you wanna throw in there. The music sounds like an arctic winter; dark, cold as hell, desolate, and strangely beautiful.

This record is an exercise in minimalism. All the musical elements could be easily duplicated with a laptop, and there is little to no post production polish. It really sounds like Nigel Godrich (long time Radiohead producer) probably just hit the "record" button and sat back to listen. Thom's voice sounds very natural, no processing, no reverb, just emotion. And that is precisely what I hoped to hear. This music is anti-pop in every way, and thank god for that.

The Eraser drops on July 21st and is worth twice whatever they decide to charge for it. A definite must for all Radiohead fans.
