Apparently, I have been sleeping on Japanther. While researching this band (believe it or not, I actually do research), I discovered that they have been written about in the New York Times, Thrasher, and my favorite non-skate mag, VICE. Where have I been? Better late than never I guess.
Japanther is two guys, and I don't even really know both of their names. One of 'em is named Ian. Fuck, so much for research. What I do know is that the music that they pump out is entirely unique, and it rules. One of a critic's favorite tools is the ability to compare Band A (Japanther) to Bands B,C, and D. But what if Band A doesn't really sound like anything else out there? Well, I guess we try to compare anyway. So here we go, I hear bits and pieces of the following bands when I listen to Japanther: Sonic Youth, the John Spencer Blues Explosion, Atom and His Package, Death From Above 1979, and Ween. And yet, they don't really resemble any of these bands in overall delivery. I give up.
One dude plays bass, the other plays drums, and the tape machine plays samples. The production quality on this recording ranges from "recorded in your bedroom" to "recorded in a trash can", and that's part of the magic. This band is the modern version of the non-stop touring punk bands that you knew and loved back when your knees didn't hurt in the mornings. When (not if, because it's only a matter of time) these kids roll into your town, do yourself a favor and go see them live. After they blow you away, buy a CD from them so they have money to eat. Japanther rules.
