Broadcast-Tender Buttons Ear-Pollution CD
February 7th, 2006 12:48
Broadcast is back, stripped down to the basics in both sound and number of members. Trish Keenan and James Cargill put together a disc that makes the most of just vocals and synth, with maybe a hint of guitar. Trish's soothing voice (think Stereolab) balances out all the bleeps and bloops quite nicely. The overall effect is modern psychedelia, and I love bands that make me feel like I am on drugs. Actually, that reminds me of a story that may help put this album in perspective:

Back in the day, when I was a carefree young lad, a friend and I dropped a hit of acid with little strawberries on it. To pass the time (and because we were losers with no rides) we decided to walk from Norwalk to Whittier to party with some friends. Now this is a considerable distance, and by the time we got there, your humble narrator was tripping balls. When we arrived, the world started to get weird. I remember sitting on the couch in the living room. Everything was purple. I thought I was in a purple horror movie, it was great. As usual, there was music on, and music tends to transform when one's brain is sizzling like that egg in the commercial. All details were stripped from what I was listening to, just tones and melody and beats. I couldn't understand words or anything. It was all really pleasant and soothing.

We ended staying up all night, taking bong rips as the sun rose. This one dude starts talking about skateboarding and I am picturing cartoony characters throwing themselves down handrails. You remember that Lance Mountain graphic where there's the yellow smiley cartoon dude doing a flip or something? That was the guy skating in my mind, and it was the funniest thing ever. I was a little limp from the whole experience, and I think I slept for like 15 hours the next day.

Tender Buttons reminds me of the days when I could get away with stuff like that because it sounds like music sounded to me when I was really high. If you like trippy electronic music, you need to own this. Thanks to Warp for being the first label to send me stuff to review.
