Beck-Guero Ear-Pollution CD
January 24th, 2006 11:15

Beck is one of those artists that constantly keeps you on your toes. You never really know what to expect with each new release, and his discography has really run the gamut from the sound that made him famous (Odelay, Mellow Gold) to sweet lovin' soul/funk (Midnite Vultures), to lush ballads (Sea Change). Well Guero delivers some of the Odelay style Beck up, and it's all good. It's probably no coincidence that this album is the result of a reunion of the almighty Dust Brothers and Mr. Hansen, seeing as this combo was responsible for the creation of music that put Beck on the map.

This disc takes the beats, throws in a little sample magic here, some keyboards there, a little country, and whoa, was that some bossanova? You get the idea. Hell Yes (track 7) makes me want to put some cardboard on the ground and practice my windmills. Que Onda Guero (track 2) sounds like living next door to cholos. The production is dense and reminiscent of past Dust Brothers magic like Paul's Boutique. Jack White also gets in on the action on Go It Alone, which is one of the high points of this record. Did I just write record? Whoa. Anyway, this is a really fun listen, and I shouldn't have to tell you to give Beck a shot anyway.
