| Albums you should already own. |
| Roy Starin |
Yes yes y'all, and you don't stop. How've you been? Been keeping up on the non-stop drama that is the bulletin boards? Yeah, we suck and most of us are dicks and kooks, but this is my dusty little cobweb-ridden corner of the website, so right now I got the mic. So sit back, crack a beer, and give your keyboard a rest for a minute. You can go back to calling each other names when you are done reading.
As you may have guessed by the title of this one, I am hoping to turn you on to albums that may not already be in your collection. Now, I am not digging too far into the crates for this first round, but I can tell you that these recommendations are gonna run the gamut as far as genre is concerned. These first three should be totally easy to locate, so go get 'em and turn yourselves on to some new shit.
1) R- Queens of the Stone Age
I am pretty sure that I don't have to describe QOTSA to most of you. Their last two albums got some high exposure, and they are both good discs. R, however is by far my favorite. It is a little less heavy than the most recent two albums; Songs for the Deaf and Lullabies to Paralyze, and it unfolds like a good album should, like a complete thought. The overall feel is pretty much the definiton of "stoner rock", complete with a nice little undercurrent of the paranoia that comes with a little overindulgence. This is one of those perfect albums to pop on in the car during a road trip, or on the old IPod for some mental space travel. Plug in and enjoy.
2) Different Class- Pulp
Now, you are either a fan of Brit pop or you aren't. If you like bands like Blur, Oasis, and Radiohead, Pulp should not be strangers to you. If you are looking for some awesome pop with a touch of disco, and if you enjoy British wit and songs about sex, coming of age, and sex, then Different Class is your album. This is Pulp's finest album by a long shot, and Jarvis Cocker is (or at least was) a god in jolly ol' England when this came out. Let me close this review with my favorite Jarvis story. Just before the release of this album, Michael Jackson was caught up in his first kiddie diddling scandal. Jacko was performing at some British music award show, and surrounded himself on stage with kids while delivering his perfomance. The whole gesture bothered Jarvis so much that he rushed onstage and punched Michael Jackson in the face. Or at least that's what I read somewhere.
3) More Adventurous- Rilo Kiley
Jenny Lewis used to be a child actor. You can see some of her work in Troop Beverly Hills. She is now in Rilo Kiley and they made the best indie pop album of the last 400 years when they put out More Adventurous. Her voice is light and sweet, and the songs will probably make your girlfriend cry. But it will be the good kind of cry. These songs are at turns tender, sad, sarcastic and just a little syrupy. But goddamn if they aren't perfect. All except for track 7, I can live without that one. Their sound is a mishmash of influences, from country to 60's girl group to new wavey whatever. Listen to it and find your own friggin influences. Seriously though, I really cannot recommend this album highly enough, except for track 7. That one just sticks out like a sore thumb.
There you have it, folks. I took the mellow route this time around so the next one will be more hardcore music, dude. Just like this website. Hard fucking core.
Send me stuff!
